Gastrologist vs. Gastroenterologist: What’s correct?

Some medical terms can be difficult to pronounce and a good example is gastroenterology, which deals with the health of the digestive tract.  Being difficult to say it, many people call it Gastrology!
Gastrology word is not entirely wrong as it does have a medical definition: It’s the study of stomach diseases. But it’s not a real medical specialty! So, the type of doctor you need to search for stomach problems is a gastroenterologist and not a gastrologist! Gastrology might have been a medical term in the previous centuries but no more!

Who Is a Gastroenterologist?

Gastroenterologists specialize in the health of the entire digestive tract.  They have 10 years of specialized education & training after graduating from medical school. They are trained to take care of the digestive tract organs which include Esophagus, Stomach, Small intestine ( small bowel), Colon ( large bowel), Rectum, Pancreas, Gallbladder, and Liver

When to See a Gastroenterologist?

Please consult a Gastroenterologist (and not Gastrologist!) If you have issues with swallowing, Heartburn, GERD, Stomach pains, change of bowel habits, blood in the stool, suspected cancers in the digestive tract, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, and Hepatitis.

They perform painless upper endoscopy and colonoscopy to accurately diagnose the diseases and conditions.
